Do you Tithe?
I had always heard about tithing in the Bible and thought about doing it on a consistent basis but just never followed through with it. I have given along the way to charities, churches, girl scouts, the cancer fund my kids etc. But when I really think about it I have never really given enough considering how blessed I have been in my life. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 says:
whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and however sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Well that is pretty clear isn’t it. The more we give the more blessed we will become. But where does the 10% part come from? There are several places in the bible where it addresses tithing. Moses talks about certain percentages in Leviticus. I did however find this scripture in Genesis that spells out the 10% rule:
“And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: ‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then shall the Lord be my God … and of all that you shall give me I will surely give the tenth unto you.”
I have really thought about this, so do people loose their fortunes because they were greedy and did not give back to the needy?
It is interesting to watch when you are standing in line at the grocery store or Wal-Mart when the cashier ask each person “do want to give to the cancer fund or whatever charity it may be?” how many people do you see give back?
I found Mark 12:41-44 of interest as we see what Jesus says about the subject:
And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large suns. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, ” truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Now that will make you think.
As I write this, I think to myself, is that gift I gave at Christmas tithing? I guess it is as long as there are no strings attached. For example, I gave you this nice gift so you owe me. it is how you give, not expecting anything in return.
We are all learning along the way in this journey called life, I am now learning to give more back to those who really are in need. Are you giving enough back? Only you and God know the answer.
